Carers

Do you help look after someone?

Support is available.

You might be supporting a family member, friend or neighbour, without even realising that you are an unpaid carer. Caring can take many forms, and every situation is different.

Here are a few examples:

  • Dan (51) regularly attends hospital appointments with his mum and helps explain things to her.
  • Ffion (13) checks on her grandfather daily after school, helping with shopping and cooking.
  • Rhys (66) keeps a close eye on his wife Gaynor, who’s become forgetful and sometimes wanders off.
  • Tom (20) supports his brother listening to his concerns and calming him during panic attacks.
  • Owain (60) collects prescriptions and ensures his mum takes her antidepressants regularly.
  • Maya (48) supports her friend who has anxiety, being on the end of the phone whenever she is needed.

If any of this sounds familiar, you may be an unpaid carer, and you are not alone. Support is available to help you in your caring role.

Register as an unpaid carer with us

Letting us know if you are an unpaid carer can help us:

  • understand your caring responsibilities.
  • signpost you to information, help and support, either now or in the future.
  • share information about the person you care for (with appropriate written
  • consent).
  • may provide more flexible appointments that reflect your caring role.
  • offer you an annual flu jab (free).
  • refer you to other services or organisations that might be able to help you.

What is a Carer's Needs Assessment?

As an unpaid carer, you are entitled to have a Carers Needs Assessment. This is not an assessment of the care you are providing. It is an opportunity for you to talk about your needs and discuss possible ways help and support could be given.

The person you care for may also be eligible for an assessment and this could be done separately, or together, depending on the situation. Please ask for a referral form at the surgery or contact your county council.
